A World-class Institution Renewed:

The Renovation and Restoration of Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory is a historical landmark located in Los Angeles, California. After nearly 67 years of public use, it closed its doors in 2002 for its first comprehensive renovation and expansion.

Cole Lighting was the supplier of choice to undertake this massive restoration, replication and refurbishment. There was a need to be sympathetic to the “historic fabric” of the interior and exterior while maintaining strict adherence to guidelines that were required and developed during this project to meet the State Historic Building code. Thoughtful use of LED lighting and material finishes along with many hours of mock up and final production made this project a success.

Griffith Observatory

In Association with Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design

The Griffith Observatory closed in 2002 for renovation and a major expansion of exhibit space. It reopened to the public on November 3, 2006, retaining its art deco exterior. Directional signage, main entrance lighting and observation deck fixtures, were removed, cleaned, and rewired to function at maximum efficiency. Bronze elements throughout the building, including all wall moldings, ornaments, lighting fixtures, and vent grilles, were removed, cleaned, rewired and given wax finishes before being reinstalled. – Cole Lighting Restoration, Refurbish and Custom Design Project.
